If you don't already have a character, there are several ways to get
one:
You will receive an e-mail about your character as soon as it has been
created (unless an admin created it for you right away). If you don't get
e-mail after 24 hours, please bug us again, or try to log on as your
character.
NOTE:
Make sure your character is not already in use on the MUSE. You can
do this by typing, '@whereis your_character'. If it says that
the
character is not found or something, you are alright. You character
name MUST not have spaces in it. You can use these symbols, (_ or .)
to fill a space. Also, it cannot be any longer than 32 characters.
Also make sure you give us all the required information (like you DO have
a lastname!)
Public tf users: If you use FlipsideMUSE's public tf, you HAVE TO
log on to FlipsideMUSE in order to stay connected. This doesn't mean that
you can't connect to other worlds also. It just means that if you use our
tf, we'd like you to come to this MUSE also. If you don't connect to
Flipside within 5 minutes, your connection will automatically be
terminated.
QUIT - quit and leave muse (or /quit with tf)
WHO or who - print list of users currently on this muse
help - access online help
news - access online news about this muse's events and topics
say <something> (shortcut: use " instead of say) - make
your character 'say' something
page <player> = <message> - send a message to a player on
the
muse
look - look at the room you're in.
go <exit> - go through one of the obvious exits in the
room.
Please see online help on following topics: +channel, channels, register,
syntax (on Flipside type 'help +channel' etc. without quotes)
NOTE:When you see things written inside <>'s in helpfiles,
you are supposed
to replace what's inside of them with something 'suitable' (like your
message if you are paging somebody...) and not type
the <>'s in your line at all. Hey, if you keep paging me with 'p
Mint=<message>, it will take a while to figure out what you want (oh
well, help about syntax of commands, obviously :) ) But don't be
embarrassed if you make mistakes like that. We all were newbies once
and did things like that, and everybody understands :) (I mostly
remember the panic that filled me when I entered myself and realized I
didn't know how to get out.. Finally somebody answered my pages and
told me 'oh, just type 'home', silly' .. :) )
Okay, the next step is to get out of Darkness (#5) .. To some
people it
seems to be impossible, but just pay attention: The circle says 'PRESS
ME' ! All you need to do is to type 'press button', or even 'press
me' will do.. That wasn't so hard, was it? :)
If you are a guest, just
pressing the button will do. if you are a new character, you will need to
have a description and a sex before you can continue. If you already
haven't done that, you should type '@desc me=<a short description
what you want to look like> ' and '@sex me =
<male/female/something
else>' .
You will end up in Roadside (#80) and then it is up to you where
you want to go. I'd suggest North (type 'N'), but for some reason
most of our
suicidal guesties head south and ... Anyway, if you go north, you should
find a Gas Station (#1230) at some point. You can stop there, or
continue
north
(trust me, you will return to the gas station sooner or later if you want
to go places.. :) ) There you can see 'Round Shiny Object(#35)' that says
it can be entered. You
can do this by typing 'enter shiny'. You feel 'compelled to sit in
the
chair'. Then you better SIT. Type 'sit in the chair'! That usually
helps.. (in this case just typing 'sit' won't help you, you have to 'sit
in ...' .
After that, you 'feel compelled to leave'. Guess what you should type
next? Right, type 'leave' and whee, you are not at the Gas Station
any
more!
If you continue north, you will end up in the City of Terminus
itself.
Then you can either walk around and just @teleport around. Of course if
you are lazy to begin with, you can always skip the intro and just @tel
to town anyway.
Here are some places to go (type 'help @tel' if you are totally new and
have no idea what it does)
#111 - Amusement Park
If you want me to add a place to this list, please e-mail me.
If you want to build your own home, or palace or whatever, go ahead. Your
quota is 100 (that means you can have 100 objects). To see how much of
your quota you are using, type '@quota'. To see everything you
own, type '@search'. You can @dig your home, and ask an admin to
@link it to one of the residential areas. See section about building
below.
You can also build a store and ask it to be linked either to the mall, or
directly to some of thr main streets. If you run out of quota, you can
try to convince some of the admins to create you a group character.
FlipsideMUSE has ANSI color. You have to set yourself ansi (@set
me=ansi) to be able to see color. Read 'help ansi' to find out more.
We don't have a whois command yet, so typing 'whois person', @finger
person, +finger person and so on won't do you are good. If you want to
know, try paging the person and asking. They usually don't bite (too
hard..)
When your character is being created, you automatically join the
'public'
channel. The 'connections' channel of Flipside is 'log_io'. You can join
that if you feel like seeing people connect and disconnect. Read 'help
+channel' and 'help +com' to find out more.
MOTD's (Message Of The Day) will give you information about what's
going on. The changing, not-always-informal motd is attached to the end of
the WHO-list. The more permanent MOTD is the one you see when you log on,
and you can see this MOTD again by typing 'motd'.
News (type 'news' to see the topics, then 'news topic') exist but
they
aren't being updated very often.
We hope you start building and creating things after getting started. Build
and create whatever you want. Just don't leave your things out in the
public areas if they are uhm, not kid-safe. And just because a MUSE is a
virtual environment, it doesn't mean you can act like a complete moron and
do things that you'd never do in real life! Don't bug people if they want
you to leave them alone. Don't harass players OR guesties, OK?
Don't page admins with 'can I be a guide?' every day if they tell you
'Sorry NO!' after the first page. You will have plenty of things to do on
Flipside and MAYBE one day, when we get bigger, we will need more guides,
and then we will reward good little citizens.. :) But not before rest of
the admin say it is okay :)
And on FlipsideMUSE, you are not a member, you are a citizen. We
don't have mentors and you don't need to fill any 'special requirements'
in order to become a permanent character. As a matter of fact, we have
characters who have last logged on in 1995, and we still haven't gotten
rid of them! :)
You start with about 5000 credits (=muse money). If you are running
out of
it, ask a friendly admin to give you more. But don't get greedy! :) HELLO,
it is a MUSE, having lots of money means nothing! If you have over 20 000
credits and you keep whining for more, it is very likely that at least some
of the admin will get pretty annoyed with you (okay, *I* will probably get
real annoyed, and you will end up with 53 credits or something.. :) )
Consider yourself warned! :)
Another way to piss people off is to whine about everything. If you are
not happy with the Amusement Park, stores, residential areas etc, you are
more than welcome to build bigger and better ones yourself. We will be
more than happy to link them anywhere you want. So try to be polite AND
patient.. :) People on Flipside do their best to make it a good muse, but
people do have real lifes, with school, work, stuff to do, and sometimes
when they come online, they want to relax, not to hear somebody
whining about wanting to have more money or powers...
You can buy your first home from a 'housing agent' or a
'realtor' if you can find one.
They are muse objects that have been coded to dig you a one-room house
once you pay them. The problem is that there aren't too many of them
around, so it will be hard to find one.
Anyway, if you find a housing agent or a realtor, they will sell you a
house, and after that you can expand it by @digging (see 'help
@dig' online) more rooms. If you find a realtor, just look at it, and
it should tell you how muxh a house costs, and what you should do.
Basically, if the house costs 100 credits, you just type 'give
realtor=100' (syntax: give <object/person> = <amount>) and
it'll do the rest for you.
If you can't find a housing agent, or you are not sure where you want
your home to be, you can make it 'floating'. That means you can
have a house with lots of rooms without having it linked to any streets of
the city. The only way people can get to your house is by @teleporting
there. Simply do '@dig <First Room>', then you should type
'@set <first room>=floating' (otherwise it'll be a
'disconnected room', and we really don't like those.. :) They keep
giving you warnings..). As soon as you
type your
command, ou'll see a message saying '<First Room> created with room
number <# of your first room>'. Keep that # in mind, because now you
have to @teleport in that room. Type '@tel <# of the room>'.
Once you are inside that room, you should give it a description
(otherwise: Surprise! More warnings! :) ). Type '@desc
here=<Whatever you want your room to look like>'. Also you probably
want to make the room as your 'home'
(your default home is 'Login (#0)'. That means you'll end up there
if you type 'home', and from there you'd be immediately kicked into
Login Area.. that's no place to call your home! :) ). Type '@link
me=here', and the next time you type 'home, you will end up in your
room no matter where you are.
After that you can continue building your home by using the @dig command
again (read 'help @dig and especially 'help example @dig' if you
are a new user - I KNOW you want entrances and exits to the rest of your
rooms! :) ). Later on you can ask an admin to @link your house to some
nice area.
If you want visitors in your nice floating house, you will have to set at
least one of the rooms 'jump_OK' (read 'help flags'). Type '@set
<Room>=jump_OK'. Then people can drop by by typing '@tel <#
of the Room>'. If you decide that you don't want to have anybody
@teleporting
there later on, you can do '@set room=!jump_OK'. You can find out
if a
room is set jump_OK by looking at the room. If you notice a 'J'
after the
DBREF# (Data Base REFerence #) (and 'R' flag, which just means your
room really is a room) of the room, then it is jump_OK. For
example, Town Square(#333RJ) is jump_OK, but Garage(#1368R) is not.
Like I said earlier, you should get a description as soon as you first log
on. Okay, so you do have a default description, 'You see someone special
and unique.', but it would be nice if you were a bit more special and
unique than that. Type '@desc me=<A short description of what you
want to look like>'. Other things you should do are:
You can make objects with '@create <object>', and destroy them
with '@destroy <object>' or '@poof <object>' (the
difference is that with '@poof' the object disappears from your sight
immediately). No matter which one you use, it will take 10 minutes before
the object has 'officially' been destroyed. This gives you time to save
the object if you realize it didn't mean to destroy it after all.
'@undestroy <object> will save your object from being
destroyed. If you used '@poof', saving the object is a bit more
complicated, but not impossible. Since the object disappeared (what it
actually does is @teleports itself inside itself..) you have to use its
DBREF number instead if its name. When you type '@poof <object>' you
will see a message 'Okay, <object(#xxxx)> has disappeared.' Pick the
DBREF number from that line, and then type '@undestroy #xxxx'. If you
missed that line and you need to find the BDREF number of your object,
type '@find <object>'.
In order to avoid accidentally destroying your objects you can do
'@protect <object>'. This will set 'the @doomsday attribute' on
the object to -1, keeping the object from being destroyed with @destroy.
To destroy the object, it must first be @unprotected with '@unprotect
<object>'.
You should always locks your objects ('@lock <object>=me(or
here)') to prevent people from stealing them. ALSO you should not steal
anybody's objects if you happen to find an unlocked object! You can pick
it up, take a look at it, but you should put it back. Especially you
SHOULD *NOT* walk into people's homes and take their stuff. Sure,
it is easy to say 'Oh, if they want to keep their stuff, they should lock
their doors, or their stuff.' Maybe, but just because something isn't
locked, it doesn't mean you have a right to take it! I *hope* you don't do
that in real life either.. :) But if you want to keep people out of your
house, lock the doors. Also, try to keep track of your objects, don't
leave them all over the MUSE :)
If you are new to MUSE and want to learn more on your own, I recommend
you to read the original MUSEManual
(I have downloaded it and linked it here, the original can be found at
MUSENet's ftp server, it is
MUSEman1.5c, by Falryx). I myself
learned to code by reading it and trying out everything :) Another
helpful thing is to browse Flipside's helpfiles. Use your search option (in Netscape
'CTRL-F')
to find help on a specific topic.
TinyFugue, aka "tf", is a flexible, screen-oriented MUD client, for
use
with any type of MUD, MUSE, MUSH etc. If you want to get your own tf,
visit
here.
TinyFugue will compile and run on almost any UNIX-like system (you need to
have a shell account to install it :) ). Having your own tf lets you give
names to worlds with '/addworld' command, and if you store a set of
'/addworld' commands in a file, TF can read them automatically when it
starts. You can connect to more than one world at the same time, and
switch between them. You can define your own tf commands, called
macros.
Tinyfugue program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify
it under the terms of the GNU
General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation;
If you can't install your own tf, use FlipsideMUSE's public tf
(instructions on how to connect can be found in Character Registration section).

PS. This page is written by me, Mint, and all the opinions of things
written here are
mine..
What annoys me might not annoy the other admin (tho I suggets you
not to try to be annoying..). Also I have built some parts of the City
itself, so I concentrate on those parts, because I know what's there :)
I will add other stuff as soon as I explore it, or as soon as other
people tell me to add it. Right
now I am just doing this on my own :) Please explore the MUSE on your own
and enjoy, and if you have any suggestions for this page, I'd be more then
happy to hear those :) Have fun! I hope you enjoy FlipsideMUSE and
help us make it bigger and better! :)
